Bugonia 2025

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Favourite), Bugonia is a dark, absurdist sci-fi comedy based on the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet!. The story follows Teddy and Don, two conspiracy-obsessed cousins who kidnap Michelle Fuller, the powerful CEO of a pharmaceutical conglomerate. Convinced that she is actually an alien from the Andromeda galaxy plotting to destroy Earth, they hold her captive in a remote basement, subjecting her to bizarre "interrogations" to force a confession and save humanity. Emma Stone stars as the captive CEO Michelle (a role that required her to shave her head), while Jesse Plemons plays the paranoid ringleader Teddy. They are joined by Aidan Delbis as the impressionable cousin Don, Alicia Silverstone as Teddy's mother, and Stavros Halkias as a local police officer. The film has received generally positive reviews, holding a "Certified Fresh" rating of approximately 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised the "electric" chemistry between Stone and Plemons, as well as Robbie Ryan's vibrant cinematography. While some reviewers found it to be "tamer" and more accessible than Lanthimos's usual avant-garde fare—describing it as a "demented riff on Spielberg"—others felt it lacked the biting social commentary of the original Korean film. It is widely considered a visually stunning and darkly funny satire on modern conspiracy culture, though potentially less shocking than fans of the director might expect. Bugonia was released in US theaters on October 24, 2025 (limited) and expanded wide on Halloween. It has had a modest box office run, grossing approximately $16.9 million domestically and roughly $33 million worldwide as of late November. Following its theatrical window, the film was fast-tracked for home entertainment. It became available to rent or buy on digital VOD platforms (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango) on November 25, 2025.
