Deep Water 2022

Based on Patricia Highsmith's 1957 novel, the film centers on Vic Van Allen (Ben Affleck), a wealthy retired tech genius, and his wife Melinda (Ana de Armas), who live in the upscale town of Little Wesley, Louisiana. Their marriage is held together by a precarious arrangement: to avoid a messy divorce, Vic allows Melinda to openly take lovers as long as she doesn't abandon their family. However, Vic’s jealousy simmers beneath his calm exterior. The tension escalates when Vic jokingly claims to have killed one of Melinda's former lovers who went missing. When her subsequent lovers actually start turning up dead under mysterious circumstances, Vic becomes the prime suspect in a series of crimes that blur the lines between mind games and reality, turning their toxic marriage into a deadly cat-and-mouse game. The film stars Ben Affleck as the brooding and enigmatic Vic Van Allen and Ana de Armas as his provocative and impulsive wife, Melinda. The supporting cast includes Tracy Letts as Don Wilson, a suspicious neighbor and writer; Lil Rel Howery as Vic's friend Grant; and Dash Mihok as Jonas. Melinda's various lovers are played by Jacob Elordi (Charlie), Finn Wittrock (Tony), and Brendan Miller (Joel). The film was directed by Adrian Lyne, famous for previous erotic thrillers like Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, marking his return to directing after a 20-year hiatus. The film received mixed to negative reviews. While critics generally praised the palpable chemistry between Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, as well as the polished cinematography, many found the plot to be nonsensical and devoid of the high-stakes tension expected from the genre. It holds a "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes (around 36%), with the consensus being that it is a "soft-core" thriller that fails to reach the provocative heights of director Adrian Lyne's earlier work. The ending, in particular, was polarizing, with some viewers finding it unintentionally funny rather than thrilling. Deep Water did not have a traditional theatrical release. Originally scheduled for theaters, it was pulled from the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Disney-Fox merger. Instead, it was released as a streaming exclusive. Consequently, there are no traditional box office gross figures. However, streaming data indicated it was a success in terms of viewership, ranking high on weekly streaming charts upon its debut. The film was released on March 18, 2022, directly to digital platforms. Internationally: It is available on Hulu (in the US) and Amazon Prime Video (in other international territories). It is also available to rent or buy on platforms like Apple TV.
