Good Fortune 2025
Written and directed by Aziz Ansari in his feature directorial debut, Good Fortune (2025) is a supernatural comedy that blends social commentary with high-concept fantasy. The story follows Arj (Aziz Ansari), a struggling gig worker in Los Angeles who lives in his car and bounces between low-paying jobs to survive. His life takes a surreal turn when he encounters Gabriel (Keanu Reeves), a well-meaning but inept low-ranking guardian angel who typically only intervenes in minor incidents like texting while driving. Gabriel believes Arj is a "lost soul" and decides to prove that money isn't the key to happiness by swapping Arj’s life with that of Jeff (Seth Rogen), a wealthy and out-of-touch venture capitalist. The plan backfires spectacularly when Arj find that his newfound wealth has, in fact, solved all of his problems, leading him to refuse to switch back. As Jeff is forced to navigate the brutal realities of the gig economy and Gabriel is stripped of his wings by his supervisor, Martha (Sandra Oh), the three characters are thrust into a chaotic journey of class conflict and human connection. After a series of mishaps, including Arj falling into a coma and Jeff attempting to rob his own former home, Arj eventually realizes that hope—rather than just guilt or money—is what defines a meaningful life. The film concludes with the swap being reversed, Jeff using his influence to improve conditions for workers, and Arj finding purpose as a documentary filmmaker alongside his partner, Elena (Keke Palmer). The film features a star-studded comedic ensemble led by Aziz Ansari as Arj, Seth Rogen as the tech-investor Jeff, and Keanu Reeves as the celestial meddler Gabriel. Keke Palmer delivers a grounded performance as Elena, Arj’s love interest and the film’s moral center, while Sandra Oh plays Martha, Gabriel’s stern angelic supervisor. The supporting cast includes veteran actor Stephen McKinley Henderson, Matt Rogers, Penny Johnson Jerald, Sherry Cola, and Aziz's father, Shoukath Ansari. Behind the scenes, the film was produced by Anthony Katagas and Alan Yang, with a musical score composed by the legendary Carter Burwell and cinematography by Adam Newport-Berra. Despite its high-profile cast and generally positive critical reception (holding a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes), Good Fortune struggled to find a significant audience during its theatrical run. Produced on a budget of approximately $30 million, the film debuted in North America on October 17, 2025, with a modest $6.2 million opening weekend. By the end of its theatrical window, it grossed roughly $16.6 million domestically and approximately $9.5 million internationally, for a worldwide total of about $26.1 million. The film faced stiff competition from horror sequels like The Black Phone 2 and was ultimately considered a financial disappointment for its distributor, Lionsgate.Following its theatrical run, Good Fortune moved quickly to home entertainment platforms. It became available for Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) on November 7, 2025, allowing audiences to rent or purchase it on services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Physical media releases, including 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, followed on December 9, 2025. In the United States, the film is expected to land on subscription streaming services like Starz (and potentially Peacock due to Lionsgate's multi-year licensing deals) in early 2026, while international audiences can find it through regional VOD storefronts.
