Last Christmas 2019
Released in 2019 and directed by Paul Feig, Last Christmas is a festive romantic comedy inspired by the music of George Michael and Wham! The film tells the story of Katarina "Kate" Andrich, a young woman in London whose life is a series of "bad decisions" following a life-threatening illness. Working a dead-end job as an "elf" in a year-round Christmas shop owned by a strict but kind woman she calls "Santa," Kate feels disconnected from her family and her own dreams of becoming a singer. Her life begins to shift when she meets a mysterious, optimistic man named Tom Webster, who encourages her to "look up" and appreciate the world around her. As they spend more time together, Tom's whimsical influence leads Kate to mend her relationship with her Yugoslavian immigrant mother, Petra, and her sister, Marta, while also volunteering at a local homeless shelter. The story takes a poignant and supernatural turn when Kate, wanting to deepen her relationship with Tom, discovers the truth behind his frequent disappearances. Upon visiting his apartment, she learns from a real estate agent that Tom died in a bicycle accident exactly one year prior. In a stunning twist that literalizes the lyrics of the titular song, it is revealed that Tom was the organ donor whose heart was transplanted into Kate during her surgery the previous Christmas. Realizing that her "encounters" with him were manifestations of his spirit helping her heal, Kate fully embraces her second chance at life. The film concludes with a heartwarming Christmas concert organized by Kate at the homeless shelter, where she performs a moving rendition of "Last Christmas" before a final scene shows her thriving and healthy the following summer. The film features a star-studded cast led by Emilia Clarke as the chaotic but endearing Kate and Henry Golding as the ethereal Tom. Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, who also co-wrote the screenplay, plays Kate's mother, Petra, while Michelle Yeoh delivers a memorable performance as Kate’s boss, "Santa." The supporting cast includes Lydia Leonard as Kate's sister Marta, Boris Isaković as her father Ivan, and Peter Mygind as the "Dane" who courts Santa. Cameos and smaller roles feature notable names like Rob Delaney, Peter Serafinowicz, and Patti LuPone, adding to the film's charm and British wit. Financially, Last Christmas was a significant success relative to its modest budget of approximately $25–30 million. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, it proved to be a "sleeper hit" with audiences, grossing $35.1 million domestically in the United States and Canada and a much stronger $88.3 million in international territories. This brought its total worldwide box office to roughly $123.4 million, making it one of the more successful original holiday-themed romantic comedies of the decade. Its enduring popularity as a modern festive staple has continued to drive its performance in the home market and on digital platforms.Today, on Christmas Day 2025, the film is widely available for streaming across various global platforms. In many regions, including the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, it is a seasonal staple on Netflix. In the United States, it frequently cycles between Peacock (due to its Universal Pictures distribution) and Netflix, and it is currently available for subscribers on Prime Video in several international territories. Additionally, the film can be rented or purchased worldwide on major digital storefronts such as Apple TV (iTunes), Google Play, and Amazon.
