Mirrors No. 3 (2025)
Mirrors No. 3 (Miroirs No. 3) is a 2025 German psychological drama film written and directed by acclaimed auteur Christian Petzold (Transit, Undine). The plot is a minimalist, enigmatic story centered on Laura (Paula Beer), a young music student who survives a horrific car crash that kills her boyfriend. Physically unscathed but emotionally adrift, she is taken in by Betty (Barbara Auer), a mysterious, isolated woman who witnessed the accident and lives in a secluded countryside home. The film is named after a piece in Maurice Ravel's piano suite, and it explores the themes of grief, emotional displacement, and the unorthodox ways damaged people seek to repair themselves. As Laura integrates into Betty’s life, filling a void left by the loss of Betty's own daughter, the women begin to subtly "mirror" each other's behaviors and roles, creating a delicate, ambiguous, and emotionally charged new family dynamic with Betty's estranged husband and son. The film stars Paula Beer, a frequent collaborator of Petzold's, alongside Barbara Auer, Matthias Brandt, and Enno Trebs. Critically, Mirrors No. 3 has been well-received on the festival circuit, premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section and screening at TIFF and the New York Film Festival. Critics praise the film as "textbook Petzold," highlighting its restraint, elegant direction, and the powerful, understated performances by Beer and Auer. While some reviews note it is a slighter, quieter work compared to his previous films, the general consensus is positive, recognizing its profound and deeply humane exploration of trauma and connection. As an independent, arthouse foreign-language production, its box office figures are modest and tied to a staggered international rollout, with releases in Germany and France in late summer/fall 2025. The worldwide box office is currently reported to be around $72,600 from limited engagements in select territories. Regarding streaming, the film's US rights were acquired by an independent distributor, so its wide digital release schedule is currently being managed. It is not yet available on major global streaming services but will likely be released on a specialized arthouse platform like MUBI in 2026, following its full festival and limited theatrical run.
