Oh, Canada 2024
Oh, Canada is a 2024 American drama film written and directed by veteran filmmaker Paul Schrader, based on the 2021 novel Foregone by Russell Banks. The movie reunites Schrader with actor Richard Gere, over 40 years after their collaboration on American Gigolo (1980). The plot centers on Leonard Fife (played in old age by Richard Gere and as a younger man by Jacob Elordi), a celebrated, yet ailing, political documentarian who has agreed to an extended, unfiltered interview with his former student, Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), in an effort to recount the true story of his life before it's too late. The film's narrative is constructed with non-linear flashbacks that move between the present and his past, including his time as a Vietnam War draft-dodger in the 1960s, as his wife and artistic partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), bears witness to the confession. The movie dissects the difference between the public myth and the private reality of the artist, exploring themes of guilt, regret, political courage, and a lifetime of personal failings versus professional successes. The ensemble cast also includes Victoria Hill, Penelope Mitchell, and Kristine Froseth. The film premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was distributed by Kino Lorber.
