The Choral 2025
Set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Ramsden in 1916 during the height of World War I, The Choral is a British historical comedy-drama film that explores the resilience of a community finding solace in music amidst devastating loss. As the war has depleted the local Choral Society of its male singers, the determined committee seeks to press ahead with a major performance of Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius. They hire the new and demanding chorus master, Dr. Henry Guthrie, played by Ralph Fiennes. Guthrie, recently returned from a career in Germany and carrying a mysterious past, is tasked with training a motley crew of new recruits, primarily local teenage boys and girls, to fill the ranks. The film contrasts the joyful discovery of music and emerging desire among the young singers with the looming dread of conscription, which threatens to pull the new male members to the front lines. The story, which blends dry British wit with heartfelt emotion, centers on how music and community serve as a vital lifeline and a form of quiet rebellion against the chaos of war. The Choral marks the fourth screen collaboration between BAFTA, Olivier, and Tony Award-winning writer Alan Bennett (delivering an original screenplay) and director Nicholas Hytner (The Madness of King George, The History Boys). The cast also features well-known British actors like Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms, and Simon Russell Beale. The film had its World Premiere in September 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
