The Fantastic Four: First Steps 2025

Directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision), this film officially introduces Marvel’s "First Family" into the MCU, but with a twist: it takes place in a distinct, retro-futuristic 1960s universe known as Earth-828. The story follows the team as they balance their celebrity status and scientific exploration with a terrifying cosmic threat. Reed Richards and Sue Storm, who is expecting their first child, must lead the group to defend their world from Galactus, a world-devouring entity, and his herald, the Silver Surfer. Pedro Pascal stars as the brilliant but emotionally distant Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), with Vanessa Kirby as the powerful matriarch Sue Storm (Invisible Woman). They are joined by Joseph Quinn as the charismatic hothead Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the lovable, rock-skinned Ben Grimm (The Thing). Ralph Ineson provides the menacing voice for Galactus, while Julia Garner plays a female version of the Silver Surfer (Shalla-Bal). The film has been a "sleeper hit" with critics and fans, praised for revitalizing the MCU after a rocky period. It holds a strong "Fresh" rating (around 86%) on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have universally acclaimed the distinct 1960s aesthetic and the genuine "family" chemistry between the four leads, noting that it skips the tired origin story to focus on character dynamics. While some critics felt the third act wrapped up too quickly and sidelined Galactus, the film is largely considered the best Fantastic Four adaptation to date, successfully blending heartwarming emotional beats with high-concept sci-fi visuals similar to The Incredibles. Released in theaters on July 25, 2025, the film performed solidly, grossing approximately $521 million worldwide.
