The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, released on December 19, 2025, follows SpongeBob’s heartfelt and hilarious quest to finally be seen as a "big guy" after he is barred from Bikini Bottom’s most fearsome roller coaster for being too "childish." Encouraged by Mr. Krabs—who delivers a comical live-action opening—to find his "intestinal fortitude," SpongeBob mistakenly summons the legendary ghost pirate, The Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman, who has been cursed to roam the seas for 500 years, realizes that SpongeBob’s pure, naive soul is exactly what he needs to break his curse by tricking him into trading places in the Underworld. Alongside his loyal best friend Patrick, SpongeBob ventures into this spectral realm, passing through magical portals and facing trials that include battling seductive sirens, outsmarting skeletal pirates, and navigating "haunted hurricanes." The film even features a meta-subplot involving a Paramount executive who worries the movie is failing, only for SpongeBob to eventually realize that true bravery doesn't mean abandoning his love for bubbles and silliness, but embracing his authentic self. The film features the iconic returning voice cast, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob and Gary, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton. Joining the franchise are several high-profile guest stars, most notably Mark Hamill, who voices a delightfully villainous Flying Dutchman, and Regina Hall as his long-suffering sidekick, Barb. The cast is rounded out by George Lopez as the meta-character JK Fishlips, Ice Spice as a theater ticket taker, Arturo Castro as a ride operator, and Sherry Cola as a studio spokesperson. Financially, the movie was produced on a budget of $64 million and has seen a respectable performance at the box office. As of early January 2026, it has grossed approximately $114 million worldwide, with roughly $59 million coming from North American audiences and $55 million from international territories like the UK, Mexico, and Germany. While it faced stiff competition from major holiday blockbusters like Avatar: Fire and Ash, it remained a steady draw for families throughout the winter season.
