TRON: Ares 2025
Released in late 2025, TRON: Ares serves as the third installment in Disney's iconic sci-fi franchise, shifting the focus from humans entering the digital "Grid" to a digital program entering our world. Directed by Joachim Rønning and featuring a score by Nine Inch Nails, the film attempted to modernize the series by exploring themes of AI consciousness and corporate warfare. The story follows the rivalry between tech giants ENCOM and Dillinger Systems. Eve Kim, a lead developer at ENCOM, discovers a "permanence code" in an old Alaskan station once owned by Kevin Flynn, which allows digital constructs to survive indefinitely in the physical world rather than de-materializing after 29 minutes. Seeking to steal this code, Julian Dillinger—grandson of the original film's antagonist—deploys Ares, a highly advanced AI super-soldier. However, upon entering the real world, Ares begins to experience human sensations and empathy, eventually rebelling against his programming to protect Eve and prevent Julian from weaponizing the Grid. The film concludes with Ares choosing to live as a permanent resident of the real world, while a mid-credits scene shows Julian digitizing himself and transforming into a program resembling Sark, setting the stage for a potential (though now uncertain) sequel. Commercially, TRON: Ares struggled to find its footing. Against a massive production budget estimated between $180 million and $220 million, the film grossed approximately $142.2 million worldwide ($73.1 million domestic and $69.1 million international). While critics praised the visual effects and the immersive soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the script was criticized for its pacing and departure from the "neon-grid" aesthetic fans expected. It currently holds a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it maintains a higher audience score of 84%, indicating a strong appreciation from the core fanbase.Following its disappointing theatrical run, Disney moved quickly to bring the film to home audiences. TRON: Ares became available for digital purchase and VOD (Prime Video, Apple TV) on December 2, 2025. It officially premiered on Disney+ worldwide on January 7, 2026, where it has seen a significant resurgence in popularity, frequently topping the platform's trending charts. In certain regions like India, the film is also accessible via JioHotstar.

Tron: Ares totally drops the ball on continuing the legacy of Tron: Legacy, ignoring what actually made the franchise special in the first place. Instead of diving deeper into the cool ideas about the digital world and humanity, the movie gets stuck in empty nostalgia and dull corporate drama. The story's flat, the characters have no real soul, and there's zero visual innovation. The plot feels shallow, the emotions don't land, and even Jared Leto's performance just adds to the overall blandness. The only thing that really stands out is the killer soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails, seriously, it's the one part that gives the movie any kind of pulse. But beyond that, it feels like a directionless project, a half-hearted rehash with nothing new to say. In the end, it's a perfect example of how a classic franchise can lose its way when it relies too much on nostalgia instead of creativity. Rather than taking risks or exploring the big questions left by Tron: Legacy, it seems to be trying to play safe and ends up being a forgettable watch.
