Beauty and the Beast 2017

Released on March 17, 2017, Disney’s live-action reimagining of Beauty and the Beast became a global phenomenon, blending nostalgic musical elements with modern visual effects. Directed by Bill Condon, the film expanded on the 1991 animated classic, providing more depth to the characters' backstories and the world they inhabit. The story opens in 18th-century France, where a selfish and cold-hearted Prince is visited by an enchantress disguised as a beggar woman. When he cruelly denies her shelter, she transforms him into a monstrous Beast and his servants into household objects, decreeing that the curse will only break if he learns to love and earns love in return before the last petal of an enchanted rose falls. Years later, in the village of Villeneuve, a bright and independent woman named Belle yearns for adventure while rejecting the advances of the arrogant war hero Gaston. When her father, Maurice, becomes lost and is imprisoned by the Beast for picking a rose, Belle finds the castle and bravely takes her father’s place as prisoner. Though initially fearful, Belle befriends the castle's enchanted staff—including Lumière, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts—who encourage a bond between her and their master. As Belle and the Beast find common ground through their love of literature and shared sense of isolation, the Beast reveals a magical book that allows them to travel to her childhood home in Paris, where she learns her mother died of the plague. Meanwhile, Gaston, fueled by jealousy and ego, attempts to institutionalize Maurice and eventually leads a mob to "kill the Beast." After a final confrontation on the castle ramparts where Gaston falls to his death, Belle professes her love for the Beast just as the final petal drops. The enchantress, who had been watching the village as a hermit named Agathe, restores the Prince and his servants to human form, reuniting the kingdom in a grand celebration. The film features a star-studded ensemble led by Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast/Prince (portrayed through motion-capture and voice). Luke Evans plays the villainous Gaston, with Josh Gad starring as his bumbling sidekick, LeFou. The enchanted staff is brought to life by a prestigious group of actors: Ewan McGregor as the charismatic candelabra Lumière, Ian McKellen as the fastidious clock Cogsworth, Emma Thompson as the maternal teapot Mrs. Potts, and Stanley Tucci as the harpsichord Maestro Cadenza. Audra McDonald portrays the wardrobe Madame de Garderobe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays the feather duster Plumette, and Kevin Kline provides a grounded emotional performance as Belle’s father, Maurice. Beauty and the Beast was a historic commercial triumph, grossing a massive $1.266 billion worldwide. It earned approximately $504 million in North America and $762 million in international markets. At the time of its release, it became the highest-grossing live-action musical ever made and the second-highest-grossing film of 2017. The movie's success was fueled by an enormous opening weekend of $174.8 million in the U.S., proving the enduring power of the Disney "Renaissance" era properties when adapted for modern audiences. As a major Walt Disney Pictures production, the film is permanently available for streaming worldwide on Disney+ (known as Disney+ Hotstar in India and parts of Southeast Asia). For those without a subscription, the film is widely available for digital purchase or rental on platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and YouTube. In late 2025, it remains a staple of Disney's digital library, often featured in "Live-Action Remake" collections across these services globally.

A fabulous movie, I enjoyed every moment. So beautifully done that I would watch it again. It's a true musical as they used to be. I cried and laughed, it brought out many emotions. It's a great family film. The artistry and special effects make a great Disney style fantasy come to life. The music and songs were very pleasant in typical Disney fashion.
