Gods of Egypt 2016
Gods of Egypt is a 2016 fantasy action film directed by Alex Proyas. The movie is a fantastical take on ancient Egyptian mythology, where gods live among mortals. The film's story centers on the struggle for control of Egypt. The god Horus (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is set to be crowned king by his father, Osiris (Bryan Brown). However, Osiris's jealous brother, Set (Gerard Butler), the god of darkness, usurps the throne, kills Osiris, and blinds Horus, taking his eyes. A year later, Egypt is in chaos under Set's tyrannical rule. A mortal thief named Bek (Brenton Thwaites) and his lover, Zaya (Courtney Eaton), are caught up in the conflict. When Zaya is killed, Bek takes one of Horus's stolen eyes and seeks out the exiled god. Bek promises to help Horus retrieve his other eye and reclaim the throne in exchange for Horus bringing Zaya back from the dead. Their quest takes them across Egypt, where they encounter other gods and mythical creatures. They form an unlikely alliance with the goddess of love, Hathor (Élodie Yung), and the god of wisdom, Thoth (Chadwick Boseman), as they work to defeat Set and restore balance to the world.🗣️ Critics Critically, the film was not well received. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a very low rating (about 15%) and critics found issues with the story, dialogue, pacing, and especially the white‑washing of the cast (i.e. using mostly non‑Egyptian / Caucasian actors in roles of Egyptian gods/historical figures). Some reviewers praised its visual spectacle, set design, scale, and ambition of the worldbuilding. But many felt that the CGI effects were inconsistent, the plot was predictable, and the script muddled. Financially, it more or less under‑performed: even though the box office was slightly above the budget, the extra costs (marketing, etc.) meant it was a flop in effect. The studio reportedly lost around US$90 million.🎯 Conclusion – Gods of Egypt (2016) Gods of Egypt aimed to be a visually ambitious, mythological fantasy epic set in ancient Egypt, blending gods, monsters, and magic in a high-stakes adventure. While it had a big budget, notable cast, and eye-catching CGI, it ultimately fell short in several key areas: Storytelling and script were widely criticized as weak and clichéd. Casting choices sparked controversy due to the lack of authentic representation. Visual effects, while grand in scale, were inconsistent and sometimes overwhelming. Reception was largely negative, both critically and commercially, resulting in the film being considered a box office flop.Despite its flaws, some viewers enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure or appreciated its boldness in worldbuilding. 👉 In short: Gods of Egypt is a flashy, myth-inspired action-fantasy that had potential but was undone by poor execution and tone-deaf creative choices.
