Steve 2025

The 2025 film Steve is a drama starring Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy as the titular headteacher of a last-chance reform school for troubled teenage boys. Directed by Tim Mielants and written by Max Porter, the film is an adaptation of Porter's 2023 novella Shy. Set in mid-1990s England, the narrative focuses on one pivotal and chaotic 24 hours at the under-resourced Stanton Wood Manor as Steve desperately fights for the school's integrity and prevents its impending closure due to a lack of funding. Throughout the turbulent day, which is complicated by an intrusive documentary crew, Steve grapples intensely with his own failing mental health and a reliance on substance abuse to cope with the pressure. In parallel, the film follows the struggles of one of his students, Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen whose inner turmoil and impulse for self-destruction comes to a head after his family cuts contact. The supporting cast includes Tracey Ullman as Steve's deputy Amanda, Emily Watson, and Little Simz. The film had a limited theatrical release in September 2025 and began streaming on Netflix on October 3, 2025.
