TRON: Ares 2025
TRON: Ares is a 2025 science fiction action film directed by Joachim Rønning that serves as a standalone sequel to TRON: Legacy (2010), shifting the franchise's focus from humans entering the digital grid to digital programs invading the real world. The plot follows Ares (Jared Leto), a highly sophisticated AI program sent from the Grid into the real world on a dangerous mission by Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), the ambitious CEO of Dillinger Systems who wishes to integrate digital beings into reality. As Ares navigates the complexities of the human experience, he forms an alliance with Eve Kim (Greta Lee), a brilliant programmer, and eventually crosses paths with the legendary Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), leading to a conflict that determines the future of artificial intelligence and humanity's coexistence. The film features a star-studded cast led by Jared Leto as the titular program, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters, with Jeff Bridges reprising his iconic role. They are supported by Jodie Turner-Smith (as the warrior Athena), Gillian Anderson, and Cameron Monaghan. Critically, the film received a mixed-to-lukewarm reception upon its theatrical release on October 10, 2025. While reviewers praised the dazzling visual effects and the pulsating score by Nine Inch Nails, the narrative was often criticized for being thin and emotionally detached compared to its predecessors. It holds a Rotten Tomatoes score hovering around 55%, though audience scores were significantly higher (around 87%). At the box office, TRON: Ares was a financial disappointment. Despite a high production budget, it grossed approximately $142 million worldwide (with about $73 million from the US), failing to ignite the blockbuster success Disney had hoped for.Regarding streaming, the film has just ended its exclusive theatrical window. It became available for digital rental and purchase (PVOD) on major platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV today, December 2, 2025. It is expected to arrive on subscription streaming via Disney+ in March 2026.

Tron: Ares totally drops the ball on continuing the legacy of Tron: Legacy, ignoring what actually made the franchise special in the first place. Instead of diving deeper into the cool ideas about the digital world and humanity, the movie gets stuck in empty nostalgia and dull corporate drama. The story's flat, the characters have no real soul, and there's zero visual innovation. The plot feels shallow, the emotions don't land, and even Jared Leto's performance just adds to the overall blandness. The only thing that really stands out is the killer soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails, seriously, it's the one part that gives the movie any kind of pulse. But beyond that, it feels like a directionless project, a half-hearted rehash with nothing new to say. In the end, it's a perfect example of how a classic franchise can lose its way when it relies too much on nostalgia instead of creativity. Rather than taking risks or exploring the big questions left by Tron: Legacy, it seems to be trying to play safe and ends up being a forgettable watch.
