Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc 2025
The Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc (2025) serves as a feature-length continuation of the anime series, adapting the pivotal "Reze Arc" of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga. The plot centers on Denji, the Chainsaw Man, following the defeat of Katana Man. After a bittersweet movie date with his boss Makima, which prompts him to reflect on his desire for genuine connection, Denji meets a mysterious and charming girl named Reze in a phone booth during a storm. Reze works at a café and quickly captivates the lonely Denji, who struggles to reconcile his newfound attraction to her with his loyalty to Makima. Their innocent-seeming romance features moments like skinny-dipping in a school pool, but is shattered when Reze asks Denji to run away with her during a fireworks festival. When he hesitates, Reze kisses him, bites out his tongue, and reveals her true identity as the Bomb Devil and a Soviet agent whose mission is to extract the Chainsaw Man's heart, leading to an explosive and bombastic battle. Denji, with the aid of his temporary partner Beam (the Shark Fiend), Aki Hayakawa, the Angel Devil, and the Violence Fiend, is forced into a deadly confrontation against Reze and her ally, the Typhoon Devil. The battle is a spectacle of non-stop action, culminating in Denji binding himself and Reze underwater to disable her bomb powers. After they wash ashore, Denji offers to run away with her, asking her to meet him at the café, believing her actions during their date were genuine. In a tragic and cruel twist, Reze changes her mind and decides to meet Denji, but is intercepted and killed by Makima and the Angel Devil in the alley before reaching the café, leaving Denji waiting alone, unaware of her fate. The film's main cast features Kikunosuke Toya as Denji and Reina Ueda as Reze in the original Japanese, with the returning cast including Tomori Kusunoki (Makima), Fairouz Ai (Power), Shogo Sakata (Aki Hayakawa), and Natsuki Hanae (Beam). Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly positive critical reception, holding a 96% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics' consensus praising the film for "revving up the carnage while maintaining a perversely sweet emotional core." Critics lauded its seamless blend of heart-wrenching teen romance and over-the-top, spectacularly animated action, with many calling it one of the best anime movie adaptations of recent years, particularly highlighting its fluidity and visual experimentation from studio MAPPA. At the box office, the film proved to be a massive commercial success, earning approximately $174.5 million globally ($43.2 million in North America) against initial predictions, surpassing many other major anime titles. For streaming, the film was released on digital platforms (PVOD, such as Apple TV, Prime Video, etc.) on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, following its theatrical run. It is expected to arrive on the subscription service Crunchyroll sometime in early 2026.
