Hedda 2025
Hedda (2025) is a provocative American drama film written and directed by Nia DaCosta, offering a modern, queer-inclusive reimagining of Henrik Ibsen's classic 1890 play, Hedda Gabler. Starring Tessa Thompson in the title role, the film transplants the action to a country estate in 1950s England, centering on Hedda, the manipulative daughter of a General, who is trapped in a loveless marriage to academic George (Tom Bateman) and desperately desires a life of wealth. The plot intensifies during a decadent house party after Hedda and George return from their honeymoon, as George is in desperate need of a prestigious professorship to pay off their debts. The tension explodes with the unexpected arrival of Eileen Lovborg (Nina Hoss), a brilliant classicist, Hedda's beautiful ex-lover (a gender-swapped character from the play), and George's academic rival for the same professorship. Hedda, torn between her present suffocation and the lingering ache of her past love, engages in a ruthless game of manipulation, tempting Eileen—a recently sober alcoholic—to drink, in a night of escalating passion, betrayal, and violence. The film features a diverse cast, including Imogen Poots as Eileen's new companion, Thea, and Nicholas Pinnock as Judge Roland Brack. Hedda premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, had a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 22, 2025, and began streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video on October 29, 2025.
