It Was Just an Accident 2025

"It Was Just an Accident" (2025) is a gripping thriller film written and directed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The movie, a co-production between Iran, France, and Luxembourg, premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2025, where it won the prestigious Palme d'Or. It is scheduled for theatrical release in France on September 10, 2025. The plot centers around Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri), a garage mechanic who, after a minor car accident involving another man, Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi), believes he has recognized the man who tortured him in prison. Eghbal, who walks with a prosthetic leg, strongly resembles "Peg Leg," the sadistic interrogator from Vahid's past. Driven by a thirst for revenge, Vahid kidnaps Eghbal and plans to bury him alive in the desert. However, uncertainty about Eghbal's true identity leads Vahid to seek confirmation from other former prisoners, including a sharp wedding photographer Shiva (Mariam Afshari), a bride-to-be Goli (Hadis Pakbaten), and an angry worker Hamid (Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr). This unlikely group of victims, all seeking justice, embark on a tense road trip, grappling with the moral complexities of their captive's fate and the true identity of their alleged tormentor. Inspired by Panahi's own experiences with imprisonment and political oppression in Iran, the film delves into themes of justice, revenge, and the lasting impact of state violence, while also weaving in elements of dark humor and humanistic observations. The cast includes Vahid Mobasseri, Ebrahim Azizi, Mariam Afshari, Hadis Pakbaten, Majid Panahi (the director's nephew), and Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr. Only Ebrahim Azizi is a professional actor, with Panahi drawing powerful performances from the entire ensemble.
