Predator: Badlands 2025
The 2025 film Predator: Badlands is a major theatrical entry in the long-running sci-fi action franchise, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who previously helmed the critically acclaimed Prey (2022). The film takes a significant creative turn by making a Predator (Yautja) the protagonist for the first time. The story, set in the distant future on the treacherous planet Genna, follows Dek (played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a young Predator outcast from his clan due to being a "runt." To prove his worth and survive, Dek embarks on a nearly impossible rite of passage: hunting the mythical "unkillable" apex predator known as the Kalisk. His journey forces him into an unlikely alliance with a damaged Weyland-Yutani synthetic named Thia (played by Elle Fanning), who acts as a guide and ally. Elle Fanning also plays Thia's militant twin synthetic sister, Tessa, who tracks the pair. The film shifts the franchise's focus to explore the Predator world and culture, including the terms "Yautja" and "Yautja Prime" (their homeworld), and features no human characters. Critically, the film has been met with generally positive reviews, with a high Rotten Tomatoes score (e.g., 89% or 90% based on initial reviews) and a "Fresh" rating. Critics praised Trachtenberg for once again successfully reinventing the franchise's formula, delivering a "bigger, wilder, and surprisingly emotional" adventure. The partnership between Dek and Thia was highlighted as an unexpectedly fun and heartfelt pairing that injects new energy into the series, with Elle Fanning's performance being particularly commended. Reviewers also noted the film's stunning world-building, high-energy action, and creature effects despite its PG-13 rating, making it a thrilling and unique addition that delves into the themes of strength and toxic masculinity within the Predator culture. In terms of box office, the film had its domestic release on November 7, 2025. Early box office projections and reports suggested a respectable opening, with one forecast anticipating a $24–$30 million domestic opening weekend and a worldwide debut targeting $60 million. While the Predator franchise has not historically been the most lucrative, Predator: Badlands was expected to benefit from positive word-of-mouth and the theatrical excitement of a new Trachtenberg-helmed installment following the success of Prey.
