Sarah's Oil 2025
Sarah's Oil is a 2025 American biographical drama film, inspired by the remarkable true story of Sarah Rector, who became one of the nation's first female African American millionaires at the age of eleven. Set in 1910s Oklahoma during the oil boom, the film centers on young Sarah, an African American girl who receives a 160-acre land allotment, which many dismiss as worthless. Driven by faith and conviction, Sarah becomes convinced there is oil beneath her property, and when a drilling attempt proves her right, she and her family are thrust into sudden, immense wealth. The discovery draws the predatory attention of corrupt oil magnates and con men known as "oil sharks," who attempt to steal her fortune and control her land, leading to legal and personal battles compounded by the era's systemic racism. Directed, co-produced, and co-written by Cyrus Nowrasteh, the film is based on the book Searching for Sarah Rector: The Richest Black Girl in America by Tonya Bolden. The cast features Naya Desir-Johnson as Sarah Rector, alongside Zachary Levi as Bert Smith, a charming wildcatter who helps her, Sonequa Martin-Green as her mother Rose Rector, and Garret Dillahunt as Devnan, a figure with hidden motives. Distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, the movie had a theatrical release on November 7, 2025, and explores themes of faith, perseverance, family strength, and fighting injustice.
