Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed 2004
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) is the live-action sequel that reunites the Mystery Inc. gang—Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), and Scooby-Doo (voiced by Neil Fanning)—for another supernatural mystery. The film kicks off at the grand opening of the Coolsonian Criminology Museum, which features an exhibit of the costumes of all the villains they've unmasked. The celebration is abruptly crashed by an Evil Masked Figure who, using a mysterious machine, starts bringing the old costumes to life as genuine monsters, including the Pterodactyl Ghost and the Black Knight Ghost, to terrorize Coolsville and discredit Mystery Inc. Amidst a campaign by ruthless journalist Heather Jasper Howe (Alicia Silverstone) to ruin their reputation, Shaggy and Scooby become insecure about their roles and try to solve the case alone, while Velma develops a crush on the museum's curator, Patrick Wisely (Seth Green). The mystery leads the gang to an old mine and a "Monster Hive," where they ultimately manage to reverse the machine and unmask the Evil Masked Figure. The villain is revealed to be the supposedly deceased original Pterodactyl Ghost, Dr. Jonathan Jacobo (Tim Blake Nelson), who was impersonating Howe to carry out his plot for revenge. Directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn, the film received mixed to negative reviews but was a box office success, grossing over $181 million worldwide.

After the disappointing effort of the first Scooby-Doo film I wasn't much enthusiastic about this "Monsters Unleashed". But to tell the truth this film handled the characters better and the climax more interesting, at least in terms of the identity of the villain. It remained true to the original cartoon storyline in the sense that the character of the villain appeared earlier in the film. The dialogues also got better, though abandoning thick sense of humor was impossible. It failed to develop enough chemistry between the members of the gang, which is in fact faithful to the cartoon where in my opinion the characters are quite one-dimensional. The CGI of Scooby himself has improved only slightly. The monsters could have been designed better, although there are touches of nice imagination e.g. the candy floss monster. The most irritating parts were unnecessary hip-hop dance sequences. Besides such points, Scooby Doo 2 deserves more praise than its prequel.
