Troll 2 (2025)

Troll 2 (2025), the Norwegian-language monster movie sequel to Netflix's 2022 hit, Troll. The film is scheduled for a global release on Netflix on December 1, 2025. Directed once again by Roar Uthaug and written by Espen Aukan, the sequel significantly raises the stakes, with a reported bigger scale and a darker tone than the original. The plot focuses on the awakening of a new, powerful troll—described as a "megatroll"—which unleashes widespread devastation across Norway. The core trio of heroes from the first film reunites for their most dangerous mission yet: paleontologist Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann), political advisor Andreas Isaksen (Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen), and Major Kristoffer "Kris" Holm (Mads Sjøgård Pettersen). To stop the creature's ruthless rampage, which is reportedly bent on revenging itself on Norway's founding father King Olaf, the team must delve deeper into ancient Norwegian history, enlist new allies, and utilize the military's better-prepared response, which now includes UV-light equipment. The film’s production was a massive undertaking, filmed in locations across Norway (including Trondheim and Jotunheimen) and Budapest, making it the largest film production in Nordic history, and it is also rumored to feature a troll-versus-troll confrontation as the group may befriend another giant troll to take the new threat down.

The first Troll movie was a fresh take on the mythology - a surprising gem that built slow reveals into interesting character interactions, and gave us just enough action without sacrificing the underlying story. It was a treat, and remains one of the best things Netflix has ever produced, so it's no surprise that they ordered a sequel. However, the sequel lacks all of the character, warmth, and wonder that made the original so delightful. Instead, it hews very closely to the genetic "Netflix formula" that so many of their worst efforts aim for. You get a by-the-numbers government plot that sets up uninteresting motivations, ending in bland action sequences. Even the jokes fall flat this time. The trolls themselves look as good as ever, and there are a few moments where the old sparks shine through, but overall this is a sequel that completely misses the mark. Not recommended.
