Anaconda 2025
The Anaconda (2025) film is a meta-reboot and action-adventure comedy horror that serves as the sixth installment in the franchise. Directed by Tom Gormican, who also co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten, the film was released theatrically on December 25, 2025. Unlike previous entries that were straightforward horror-thrillers, this version leans heavily into comedy and self-referential humor, following a group of friends attempting to recreate the magic of the original 1997 cult classic. The film features a star-studded comedic cast led by Jack Black as Doug McCallister, a wedding videographer, and Paul Rudd as Ronald "Griff" Griffin Jr., a struggling background actor. They are joined by Steve Zahn as their friend Kenny Trent, Thandiwe Newton as Claire Simons, and Daniela Melchior as Ana Almeida. In a nod to the franchise's history, the film includes a meta-cameo from Ice Cube, who appears as himself (a veteran of the original film), and a surprise appearance by Jennifer Lopez in the final scene, setting up a potential future for the series. The story follows childhood friends Doug, Griff, Kenny, and Claire, who are all grappling with mid-life dissatisfaction. Griff convinces the group that he has obtained the remake rights to the 1997 film Anaconda, leading them to take out a bank loan and travel to the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil to shoot a low-budget indie version. Chaos ensues when Griff accidentally kills their trained snake, forcing him and their handler, Santiago (Selton Mello), to find a replacement in the wild. They soon discover that a real, monstrously large anaconda is hunting in the area. The tension rises when the group crosses paths with a professional Sony film crew that is actually remaking the movie with a massive budget. Griff is forced to admit he lied about the rights, and the group briefly splits up. However, after the giant snake decimates the corporate film set, the friends must reunite to survive. In a climactic sequence, Doug is swallowed whole by the snake but survives the experience (a scene filmed using a "slimesuit" inside a modified camera magazine). The survivors eventually defeat the predator by blowing it up with propane tanks and a flare gun. The film ends with the friends finishing their indie movie, only to receive a cease-and-desist from Sony—though Doug is later approached by J-Lo to direct a legitimate big-budget reboot. As of late January 2026, the film has been a solid commercial success for Sony Pictures. Produced on a budget of $45 million, it has grossed approximately $60.1 million in North America and $62.3 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $122.4 million. While it received mixed reviews from critics (sitting at around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences praised the chemistry between Black and Rudd.Regarding streaming, as a Sony release, the film is expected to land on Netflix first (likely around April or May 2026) due to the studio's existing output deal, before moving to Disney+ or Hulu later in the year. It is currently still playing in select theaters and is available for digital pre-order on platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.
