Dead to Rights 2025
Dead to Rights (Chinese: 南京照相馆, literally 'Nanjing Photographic Studio') is a 2025 Chinese historical drama film directed by Shen Ao. Set during the brutal Nanjing Massacre in 1937 following the Japanese occupation, the film is based on real-life events where photographic evidence of Japanese war crimes was secretly preserved. The plot centers on Su Liuchang ("Ah Chang"), a postman who, to save his life, pretends to be a photo developer and is forced to work for a Japanese military photographer, Hideo Itō. While developing film rolls that contain both staged propaganda and horrifying images of atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army, A Chang and a group of Chinese civilians and a hiding soldier, who have taken refuge in the studio, recognize the necessity of exposing the truth. They embark on a perilous mission to secretly copy and smuggle the damning negatives out of the city, risking their lives to ensure that the world would eventually bear witness to the massacres, rapes, and other unspeakable acts. The core cast features Liu Haoran as Su Liuchang, Wang Chuanjun as a collaborating interpreter Wang Guanghai, Gao Ye, Wang Xiao, and Daichi Harashima as the Japanese photographer Hideo Itō. The film, which premiered on July 25, 2025, achieved significant box office success in China and was selected as the Chinese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
