Kaantha 2025
Released on November 14, 2025, Kaantha is a period crime drama directed by Selvamani Selvaraj. Set against the vibrant yet murky backdrop of 1950s Madras, the film explores the toxic power struggle between a rising superstar and his former mentor. The story follows T. K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan), a street performer who rose to become the first true superstar of Tamil cinema under the guidance of legendary director Ayya (Samuthirakani). Their relationship sours when Mahadevan’s ego leads him to hijack Ayya’s dream project, Shaantha, renaming it Kaantha and demanding creative control. The tension peaks on a film set involving Kumari (Bhagyashri Borse), a Burmese refugee and the leading lady whom both men use as emotional leverage. The drama takes a dark turn into neo-noir territory when a murder occurs on-set during the climax shoot. The second half shifts into a high-stakes investigation led by the sharp-tongued Inspector Devaraj (Rana Daggubati), turning the studio into a theater of interrogation where buried secrets, betrayals, and the price of fame are finally exposed. The film opened to mixed-to-positive reviews, with significant praise for its atmospheric 1950s setting and Dulquer Salmaan's performance. In its first week, it collected approximately ₹24.55 crore net in India. By the end of its theatrical run, the film grossed a total of ₹35.44 crore worldwide, with about ₹27 crore coming from the domestic market and ₹8.45 crore from overseas territories. While it maintained a steady run, it faced stiff competition from other major releases like Lokah Chapter 1.Netflix acquired the global digital rights for the film. Following a four-week theatrical window, Kaantha began streaming worldwide on December 12, 2025. It is available for international audiences in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi, featuring English subtitles for its global subscribers.
