Good News (Gut Nuiuseu) 2025
The 2025 South Korean film Good News is a black comedy-thriller directed and co-written by Byun Sung-hyun, inspired by the real-life 1970 hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351, known as the "Yodo-go" incident. Set in 1970, the plot centers on a Japanese passenger plane hijacked by militant members of the Red Army Faction demanding to be flown to Pyongyang, North Korea, which sparks a massive diplomatic and political crisis across Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The movie follows a covert rescue mission organized in Seoul, led by a shadowy, charismatic fixer known only as 'Nobody' (played by Sul Kyung-gu), alongside an ambitious Air Force Lieutenant Seo Go-myung (Hong Kyung), and the director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Park Sang-hyeon (Ryoo Seung-bum). The mission involves a daring plan to "double-hijack" the plane from the ground, featuring desperate measures, geopolitical absurdities, and intense satire of bureaucratic spinelessness and the clash between public relations and human lives. The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and was released globally on Netflix on October 17, 2025.
